Discrimination occurs when an employer treats you less favorably than other employees, due to a certain characteristic, whether it is a female worker being treated less favorably in a male dominant work force or a male being treated less favorably due to his race.
Under Equal Opportunities Law, you cannot be discriminated against because of your gender, relationship status, race, age and/or sexual orientation. Individuals should be paid and employed purely on the basis of their skill set and ability to perform the job. Discrimination can be indirect where a working condition may disadvantage a group of people more than another or direct as highlighted in the examples above. You could also be a victim of harassment.
